For the configurations compared here, both headlamps are rated at 1,200 lumens. The important difference is the battery package, not a higher maximum light output. Compare the mode you expect to use, the carried weight and the included battery before choosing.

Sources: Silva Canada Free 1200 S specifications and Silva Free 1200 M specifications. These burn-time figures are not promises of constant maximum output throughout the full duration. Battery condition, temperature, settings and operating conditions affect real use. Do not plan a trip with no reserve based on the most optimistic endpoint.
Compare the S first when carried weight is the priority. For a shorter session, the smaller battery may be the more useful compromise, provided the relevant mode has enough runtime for the entire outing plus a reserve.
Compare the M first when you need more battery capacity. Its larger battery trades additional carried weight for the longer published burn times shown above. That is a more specific reason to choose it than assuming that an M headlamp is brighter.
These are selection principles, not an assertion that either model is best for every runner, skier or cyclist. Terrain, pace, mounting position and the lighting required for your activity still matter. Follow applicable lighting requirements and the product instructions.
Identify whether the listing is a complete headlamp package, a lamp unit, a battery or a mounting accessory. A modular product family does not mean every accessory is included with every item. For off-head carrying or a helmet/bike setup, confirm the exact compatible mounting parts and cable included with the selected package.
Do not transfer these specifications to a newer S battery or another Free brightness model solely because the name looks similar. Check the battery label, product revision and identifier. Contact [email protected] with those details for an uncertain setup.
